Wildland Fire Geospatial Support Center
The Wildland Fire Geospatial Support Center (WFGSC) collects high resolution GIS data along the Front Range of Colorado to aid in wildfire planning, response, and mitigation. The WFGSC is an interagency center for the coordination of geospatial information; it pools the technical assistance, data and technology resources of Colorado State Forest Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and ESRI to reduce costs and maximize the benefit to the public.
Using GIS data, WFGSC is creating integrated datasets based on nationally recognized data standards. This information will be used to assist counties and Fire Protection Districts in collecting and maintaining data critical to local wildland fire planning efforts. The Colorado WUI Hazard Assessment Map shows high hazard areas at a 30 meter resolution. For the purposes of fuels mitigation planning and fire suppression, detailed maps down to the parcel level scale are required. This data includes house locations with hazard ratings, fuels information and fire station locations.
The WFGSC is working on Hazard Risk Assessments at three levels:
Regional level -- The Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership (FRFTP) project involves mapping the entire Front Range region at 15 meter resolution;
County level � 1 meter resolution satellite imagery classification with home locations, roof compositions, and defensible space. A demonstration area in Bailey, Colorado is being completed first;
Parcel level � individual home inspections per NFPA 299 and Firewise standards.

The WFGSC provides outreach and training to interested counties in developing GIS-based wildland fire mitigation and response plans. It also provides geospatial data to the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center to assist in wildland fire response. WFCSC serves as a centralized data storage and distribution system to provide the most up-to-date GIS information to assist in planning wildfire mitigation and response.
