The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. Title: Trinity County, CA -- Fire Safe Council
Type: Fuelbreaks
Education
Jurisdiction: County
State: California
Program Description: The Trinity County Fire Safe Council is an active, voluntary organization dedicated to up-to-date education and public outreach to enable residents and land owners to take steps to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire within the County. The Council is part of the larger California Fire Safe Council network. Its members meet regularly and interface effectively with other groups such as the Trinity County Board of Supervisors and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF). The Council members cooperated in launching the Trinity County Landscape Fire Management Planning Process in 2000 and have undertaken a major fuels-treatment project in partnership with the CDF.

The Trinity County Fire Safe Council works cooperatively with other natural resource protection organizations, local Fire Safe Councils and county government to deliver information concerning the importance of vegetation removal and management to residents of Trinity County, California. One example of this cooperation is the Council's participation in the Trinity County Landscape Fire Management Planning Process, begun in May 2000. This project consisted of dividing the County into 5 "planning units" for the purpose of writing a Landscape Plan to reduce the risk to life and property from wildfires. The planning process included a 3-day workshop in each of the 5 regions of the County. Further, The Council has appeared before the Trinity County Board of Supervisors to inform the Board as to the Council's work with the County's Natural Resources Advisory Council.

An important fuel-reduction project undertaken recently by the Trinity County Fire Safe Council in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) is the Covington Mill/Long Canyon Fire Safe Project. This effort entails the removal of hazardous vegetation along the Long Canyon Road by the Council and the CDF Trinity River Fire Crews. According to the minutes of the April 2000 Council meeting, numerous property owners in the area have agreed for "up to 50 feet of fuels reduction on their properties", allowing the crews to treat up to mile along the north side of the road.

Members of the Council have noted that the response of residents in this area has been similar to property owners' reactions to other fuel reduction outreach projects. As property owners along the Long Canyon Road have had the opportunity to see the results of the project, their initial concerns about potential aesthetic damages have been alleviated. The Council recognizes the importance of understanding the individual property owner's "comfort level" with allowing vegetation removal. In an effort to further educate residents and help them become comfortable with the process, the Council plans to produce a brochure explaining this fuel-reduction project and to publish and disseminate "before and after" photographs of the Long Canyon Road area.
