Program Description: |
The Santa Barbara County Fire Safe Council is active in a variety of projects designed to empower property owners to take steps to reduce the risk to property and life from catastrophic wildfire. To that end, the Council works with other groups including neighborhood homeowners' associations to assist residents with vegetation removal.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Safe Council is part of the larger, statewide California Fire Safe Council network. As such, its objectives include the dissemination of up-to-date information about requirements for vegetation management for wildfire prevention. The Council is comprised of a diverse set of stakeholders including residents' associations, local business groups, and County and local fire departments. It has established sub-committees for fundraising, "pre-fire action", and public affairs and education.
The Council is successful in combining its public education objectives with fund raising efforts. For example, in 2000, the Council mailed out a large number of Fire Safe Council brochures with appropriate cover letters as a means of educating residents as to how to reduce the risk of wildfire and also a method to encourage more individuals and groups to become dues-paying members of the Council. The Council used funds donated by Allstate Insurance Company to pay for the distribution of these packets. According to the Council's website, plans are underway to conduct a large bulk mailing of this educational material and membership brochures to a wider group of towns and communities within Santa Barbara County.
