Title: Butte County, CA-- Fire Safe Council
Type: Homeowner assistance
Education
Jurisdiction: County
State: California
Program Description: The Butte County Fire Safe Council is an active organization that serves as an important clearinghouse of information relevant to its members which include local Fire Safe Councils within the County, community associations and property owners.

Recently, the group has been considering formalizing the Council by "incorporating with 501C3 status" and developing a longer-term master plan. The Butte FSC offers assistance to and coordination among several local Fire Safe Councils organized within the County, including Forest Ranch, Yankee Hill/Concow, Paradise/Fir Haven, Cohasset, and Oroville.

The Butte FSC convenes regular meetings with its members and posts minutes on its website. At these meetings, experts in vegetation management strategies and upcoming funding opportunities are given a forum. For example, at the July 2001 meeting, University of California at Davis Cooperative Extension Specialist, Mike DeLasaux discussed a project entitled, "Small Parcel Mechanical Fuel Treatment and Utilization Demonstration Project". Attendees were given the opportunity to participate in the project that seeks to thin overstocks of small trees on <3 acre parcels of land and then utilize the harvested trees commercially. In addition, the Butte FSC hosted a workshop in August 2001 where topics such as grant opportunities for securing chippers for use on cleared vegetation were presented.

The Butte FSC has implemented a "Chipper Program" for fuel reduction using grant funds to support "480 hours of coordinator time and 480 hours of personnel time for chipper operation". The project has benefited from the work of crews from the Jarbo Gap CDF station and the CCC Butte Fire Center. The program has proven so popular that the Butte County FSC is considering developing a system of prioritization for vegetation removal with first priority given to those fuel reduction projects required by California Public Resources Code (PRC) 4291. Second priority would be given to vegetation removal for road access, and third for all other fuel reduction activities.
