Public Education Activities
The State of Idaho has taken an innovative approach to wildfire prevention and mitigation through public education. The Idaho Department of Lands, Bureau of Land Management, and United States Forest Service have partnered to deliver the message Keep Idaho Green. Keep Idaho Green is an organization dedicated to getting the message of wildland fire safety out to the public using PSAs on TV and radio, and through the Keep Idaho Green website. The website provides information on home hazard mitigation, wildfire prevention and upcoming events and activities. Keep Idaho Green promotes the use of Firewise concepts and suggestions to mitigate home wildfire hazards.
Website Contents
The website is geared to adults, with information on correct use of burn barrels and slash piles, building a campfire, operating equipment in the wildland and fireworks. There is also information on defensible space, including landscaping and structural mitigation ideas, access issues, and the importance of a ready water supply.
Upcoming events throughout the state and region are listed, including community events that will have fire prevention activities, local and regional fire prevention workshops, and special events such as the annual Keep Idaho Green poster contest.
Public Awareness Activities
In 1999, Governor Kempthorne designated the third week in June each year as Idaho Wildfire Prevention Week. Keep Idaho Green kicks off its media campaign during that week.
