Program Description: |
Walla Walla County, Washington provides homeowner assistance and public education to reduce wildfire losses through its FEMA Project Impact program. Walla Walla County has about 300 homes and cabins in the WUI, which they have mapped to assess areas of high risk. The program has created some demonstrator homes for defensible space by using volunteers to clear vegetative fuels from around homes. Homeowners can apply to Project Impact for grants for a cooperative project to create and maintain defensible space around their homes. The program has purchased chippers for homeowners to borrow to chip brush and limbs around their homes. Walla Walla County Project Impact maintains a Website, and conducts local workshops to educate the public on wildfire mitigation. For more information, contact Don Marlatt.
