Title: Lewis County, WA - Wildfire Education and Prevention Project
Type: Education
Jurisdiction: County
State: Washington
Program Description: Lewis County Wildfire Education and Prevention Project

Lewis County, Washington began its Wildfire Education and Prevention Project in the Spring of 2005. The project is funded by the USFS through the Secure Rural Schools and County Self-Determination Act of 2000.

The goal of the project is to communicate to county homeowners that by reducing fire fuels on their property and creating defensible space surrounding their homes they can reduce the loss of home and property from wildfires.

Fuel Reduction Activities

A key element of the project is to reduce the incidence of Scotch Broom. This weed is prevalent in areas of East Lewis County. The project encourages homeowners to remove Scotch Broom and replace it with native plants. To aid in this endeavor they offer the use of a weed removal tool "Weed Wrench" free of charge. Fire fuel removal is being done by county personnel along local roadway right of ways. Plans are underway to implement a community chipping program in conjunction with neighborhood clean up days in the spring of 2006. Home Risk Assessments have been conducted in one community and more are being conducted.

The Wildfire Education and Prevention project has donated fire-resistant landscaping DVDs to two local community libraries for public use.

Project leaders work with Washington Department of Natural Resources to coordinate wildfire awareness campaigns, sponsor firewise workshops, and conduct fuel reduction projects.

Education Component

The Project includes a Community Outreach program of promotional advertising, newsletter publications, informational displays, community group discussions on wildfire awareness, and Firewise workshops. Publications include:

    "Firewise Lewis County Newsletter";

    "Planting in the Zone" a fire-resistant plant list for Lewis County; and

    "Be Firewise this Summer".

These publications are mailed to homeowners. Publications produced by Washington DNR and Firewise Communities/USA are also distributed to the public through direct mail, information booths and distribution through local agencies, such as an insert in the community Water District bills.

A web site was created to provide defensible space information to the public, for more information see Firewise Lewis County web site.
