The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If you would like to submit a program to the national wildfire programs database, please complete the following form (MS Word).

Title: Long Island, NY - Central Pine Barrens
Type: Education
Community Planning
Jurisdiction: County
State: New York
Program Description: Long Island Pine Barrens, NY

New York State has identified the Central Pine Barrens of Long Island as one of its highest wildfire hazard risk areas. New York State Environmental Conservation Law Article 57-0121(6)(t) set aside the Long Island Pine Barrens as a state protection and planning area in 1993. The Central Pine Barrens are managed by the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission (the Commission). The Central Pine Barrens consists of 100,000 acres covering portions of the towns of Brookhaven, Riverhead and Southampton in Suffolk County. An estimated 59,500 people live in 23,180 housing units within this area.

Fire History

In August of 1995, the Pine Barrens experienced a major wildfire complex called the Sunrise Wildfires, which burned 7,000 acres. This focused the attention of local and state fire managers on the risk of built-up fuels in the Pine Barrens ecosystem. The Central Pine Barrens Wildfire Task Force (WTF) began working together to create a Fire Management Plan for the area. The WTF includes representatives from federal, state, county, local, public and private agencies, departments and councils with a vested interest in wildfire management within the Central Pine Barrens.

In 1999 the Commission adopted the Central Pine Barrens Fire Management Plan, prepared by the WTF. The plan calls for a comprehensive approach to wildfire detection and suppression, with much emphasis on training of firefighters. Provisions for prevention and fuels reduction include recommendations for assessing the building codes and housing development guidelines within municipalities, and establishing public education programs for residents.

Public Education Program

The Mission Statement of the Suffolk County Wildfire Task Force states Continue to promote public education about fire related and public safety concerns in the Pine Barrens and surrounding areas through a combination of media sources, public presentations and displays, distribution of literature and the Pine Barrens website. Some of the recent accomplishments include:

  1. Participation in local fairs, environmental shows and expos distributing information on Smokey Bear and New York Statess but it was only a brush fire! firewise landscaping and wildland home survival brochure.

  2. A powerpoint demonstration available for community groups explains Pine Barrens ecological information and recommended Firewise landscape tips.

  3. PSAs during fire season warn local residents to be careful with fire, as 95% of the fires occurring in the pine barrens are human caused.

  4. The Pine Barrens Commission website offers information on the Pine Barrens, the wildland urban interface, and how to protect your home through firewise landscaping, in an easy question and answer format (FAQ website).

  5. The Commission produced Wildland Fire a video on wildfire safety and awareness. It has been distributed to many fire departments, libraries and schools, and is aired on cable TV.

  6. Wildland Fire is also being produced in a CD version with fact sheets attached for use in training for local fire service, homeowners and in schools.

  7. A Firewise Workshop was held in Bolton Landing during September of 2002.

  8. Three Fire-Weather Danger signs are being installed along major highway routes to alert the public to hazardous conditions.

N.Y. Wildfire and Incident Management Academy

The Academy provides training for wildland firefighters and incident managers. It mirrors an actual incident utilizing the Incident Command System (ICS) under the direction of an Incident Management Team. The Academy is held once a year, for ten days, on the grounds of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Typical curriculum include:

  1. Basic wildland firefighting and wildfire behavior;

  2. Advanced wildland firefighting;

  3. Prescribed fire;

  4. Incident Command System, including the National Interagency Incident Management System;

  5. Wildland fire and arson investigation;

  6. Specialized fire equipment training, including aerial operations.
