Public Education Activities
Tennessee provides public education materials in many forms to residents of WUI areas. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry website, contains information on creating and maintaining defensible space, firewise landscaping, emergency evacuation tips, and updated reports on fire conditions throughout the state. There are two fire seasons in Tennessee, the Fall and the Spring. Open burning of debris is restricted from September 15-May 15, and Open Burning regulations are posted on the website.
Wildland-Urban Interface Video
Tennessee has recently created a video on defensible space for Wildland-Urban Interface residents called, "Is Your Home Firesafe?" The video shows a homeowner and his home in the woods. It shows how he prepared for wildfire by creating defensible space, and both he and his wife talk about how much safer they feel with a fuel break around their home. The video tells viewers to "keep grass watered and mowed, dead trees removed, and new growth reduced, removed or replaced to insure that the area surrounding your home remains lean, clean and green to provide an adequate barrier against wildfire." The video is available to individuals and groups, and can be found at local libraries and video stores.
Wildfire Lesson Plan
Tennessee contracted with Interactive Training Media (ITM) to produce, "Tennessee Wildfire Prevention", an interactive CD-ROM to be used by 4th-6th grade students in the classroom. ITM has also produced an accompanying Teacher�s Guide to assist teachers in using this program in their classrooms. The Tennessee Wildfire Prevention CD is designed to:
- Show students that fire is vital to the health of ecosystems;
- Emphasize good fires vs. bad fires (controlled vs. wildfire);
- Promote wildfire prevention;
- Provide an educational tool that enhances critical thinking skills concerning the environment.
The Wildfire Prevention CD-ROM has a user-friendly interface design that enables teachers to incorporate the material over an entire grading period, which may be from 4-6 weeks to an entire semester. Information on the lesson plan and Teacher�s Guide is available on the internet at www.itm-info.com/wildfire/tennessee. Tennessee Division of Forestry also contracted with ITM to provide a series of nine in-service teacher workshops in selected locations across the state. The workshops introduced teachers to the Tennessee Wildfire Prevention CD-ROM and Teacher�s Guide. Workshops were held in Memphis, Jackson, Nashville, Greeneville, Knoxville, Gatlinburg and Johnson City, with 262 teachers completing the training.
