Background
The Florida Department of Community Affairs has developed a handbook, Best Development Practices for Wildfire Mitigation in Florida that offers a set of best development practices for wildfire mitigation in Florida. It is designed for use by local governments, planners, fire protection services, builders/developers/architects/ designers, and citizens. The Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and the Florida Division of Forestry (DOF) provided funding for production of the handbook to contractor Pandion Systems, Inc. The handbook will be distributed to local governments and planning offices throughout the state. Publication is anticipated by December 2003.
Topic Areas
The handbook describes specific development practices for homeowners, homeowners associations, neighborhoods, and developers to follow in order to protect their communities from wildfire. The handbook also provides information to help local planners and communities develop and adopt appropriate regulations, including a model ordinance, and guidelines for collaboration and cooperative planning efforts for wildfire mitigation. The handbook describes existing and new programs to assist communities in assessing risk and developing fire mitigation plans, such as the DOFs new GIS-based Florida Wildfire Risk Assessment system (FRA), the DOFs Wildlfire Hazard Assessment Guide for Florida Homeowners, and Firewise Communities/USA in Florida.
