The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs
serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and
programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through
the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If

Program Description: |
Several fire safe gardens have been established in California to demonstrate the type and arrangement of ornamental plants and details of home construction to mitigate the risk of wildfire.
Quail Botanical Gardens
The Quail Botanical Gardens located in Encinitas, is sponsored by the Quail Botanical Gardens Foundation, Inc. The garden features plant from regions of the world with a climate similar to southern California. The Firesafe garden demonstrates the recommended vegetative arrangement and species composition for each of four defensible space zones. A brochure that describes this zone concept and includes an extensive firesafe landscaping list is distributed to visitors. An admission fee is charged. For more information, contact the garden manager at 760-436-3036.
City of Santa Barbara Firescape Demonstration Garden
The City of Santa Barbara Firescape Demonstration Garden is sponsored by the Santa Barbara Fire Department. The Fire Department, in conjunction with many community volunteers from the landscaping and gardening business, developed the Firescape Garden project in 1985. The garden demonstrates how landscape design can significantly reduce or prevent wildfire damage to homes and property while being water efficient and beautiful. The garden lies within a fire prone oak woodland environment and features 1.7 acres of native and non-native plants that are laid out in the recommended four-zone defensible space design. Color-coded signage is used throughout the garden to identify plants suitable for planting in each of the four defensible space zones. Brochures and handouts available at the Garden include a plant list of desirable fire resistant species that identifies species selection by zone, as well as several brochures that discuss firesafe living and landscape guidelines. There is no admission fee.

University of California at Berkeley Fire Safe Garden
The University of California at Berkeley Fire Safe Garden is sponsored by UC Forest Products Laboratory in an area that simulates the wildland urban interface. Funding has been provided by FEMA, OES, and CDF. The garden demonstrates the use of landscape components commonly found in California homes, such as fences, raised beds, seating areas, and walkways. Fire resistant plant materials used include native, drought resistant, ornamental, and edible/herb species. Please view the garden plant list and garden layout web site. A structure in the garden represents a building at risk in the WUI. Examples of both firesafe and hazardous materials and construction techniques are presented.
