Program Description
The California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CDF) offers free chipping services for residents through the Community Chipping Program in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The CDF provides a chipper for the disposal of brush and woody debris around residents homes in prioritized high fire-risk areas. Residents cut and stack slash along public roads and CDF crews chip the piles. The program assists residents in meeting the California vegetative clearance requirements of PRC4290/4291 and is funded through a National Fire Plan WUI grant.
Public Education and Outreach
Educational efforts include the distribution of publications such as the CDF's Homeowner's Checklist, news releases, radio, television and newspaper coverage about fire safety and defensible space. In addition, much of the outreach to residents is handled by the local Fire Safe Councils through door-to-door contact and bulk mailings. The local Fire Safe Councils also make contact with the area residents prior to chipping to insure public understanding about the program.
Project Implementation
The procedure used by fire officials to implement a chipping project includes:
1) locating potential target communities,
2) designating a 'lead community member",
3) setting up a demonstration project to let area residents see how things could look,
4) designating dates for brush removal and chipping,
5) mailing post cards and otherwise notifying residents of the specifics of the project, and
6) publicizing the project through the local news media.
