Program Description: |
Hawaii's program for Wildfire mitigation focuses on Public Education. The State Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) maintains a website with information on fire prevention. Links on this website provide homeowners with information on Firewise home safety measures both indoors and outdoors, and fire preparedness. In some Wildland/Urban Interface areas, DOFAW maintains fire breaks, such as the Waianae fuel break bordering the town of Waianae.
In February, 2002, Hawaii hosted a Firewise Workshop in Hilo, Hawaii.
Public Information Programs
DOFAW conducts public information sessions in Wildland/Urban Interface areas. The program consists of a powerpoint presentation on fire behavior, local fire history, fire weather of the area, and a perspective on the reality of the threat of fire danger. Fire prevention activities also include numerous local appearances of Smokey Bear throughout the State, at local fairs, exhibits, shopping malls, and classrooms. He teams up with all the fire agencies statewide during the year, especially during Fire Prevention Week. Smokey teams up with Sparky the Fire Dog as they lead the fight in fire prevention! Be sure to visit Smokey's homepage.
Brochures
The Division of Forestry and Wildlife has numerous brochures in helping the public be fire-wise and fire-safe around their homes and property. Several brochures are also written and available in Spanish and in two Pilipino dialects, Visayan and Ilocano.
