Community Plan
The community of Sundance has been active in wildfire risk reduction activities since 1998. In that year, a Fire Forum was held to develop a plan to create a more firesafe community. One goal of the plan was to develop and implement a fuels management program.
Grant Funded Projects
In 2001, the community received a National Fire Plan grant to treat hazardous fuels. Plans included the creation of a fuelbreak adjacent to USDA Forest Service lands, creating a defensible space demonstration area, and reducing fuels along the single access road for the community. Projects have included public and private cooperative efforts; some of the participants have been Brigham Young University students, 12 homeowner associations, Sundance ski resort personnel, and state and federal agency employees. State fire officials are developing a five year maintenance plan for the Sundance community.
Homeowner Incentives
Several community "cleanup days" have also been held with participation of over 50 property owners. As an incentive, a recycling company out of Salt Lake City offers free chipping of woody debris to homeowners in exchange for the chipped material. An arrangement for a bulk purchase of fire-resistant shingles has been made as an incentive for homeowners to replace their shake shingle roofs.
Educational Programs
Extensive educational efforts have been implemented including seminars, homeowner meetings, direct mailings, and notifications of fire danger. The wildfire planning document adopted at the Fire Forum was published and circulated to all homeowner associations, as well.
Recognition
The National Wildfire Coordinating Group has recognized the community of Sundance as a cooperator in the Firewise Communities USA Pilot Project.
