The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs
serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and
programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through
the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If

Program Description: |
Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) focused its efforts using National Fire Plan grants in fiscal years 2001 and 2002 on Mitigation Projects and Risk Assessment and Planning. A sampling of success stories in fuel reduction work from the 2001 and 2002 projects are described below.
MITIGATION PROJECTS
Volunteer Defensible Space Training
Forty-two volunteers in the Front Range WUI area were trained in Fire Wise Concepts and hazard reduction techniques. They completed nine defensible space projects from November, 2000 to the present time. This on-going project uses CSFS-supervised volunteers to lessen wildfire hazards along the area just east of the Rockies. Award amount: $10,000. Total project cost: $21,000.
Basalt Rural FPD Hazardous Fuels Reduction Incentive Program
The Basalt Rural FPD encompasses 492 square miles in the mountains of central Colorado, in a WUI area. Five defensible space projects were completed concentrating on thinning and pruning vegetation around homesites. There has been great support and willingness to participate from landowners. Award amount: $6,900. Total project cost: $16,175.
Hotchkiss Fire Department Landowner Incentives
Located in the Grant Junction District, this is a WUI area of high-density Pinon-Juniper forest type, with poor water supply and long driveways. The project provided cost-share for up to 60 acres of private land, bordering BLM land. Fifteen projects were completed creating defensible space, thinning and slash disposal. A total of eighty-eight acres were treated. Award amount: $31,000. Total project cost: $61,889.
Lee Springer Prescribed Fire
The Springer was one of the highest fuel hazard locations in the Gunnison area where 84 homes are located. A burn plan was written and approved in Spring of 2001. The landowner pruned lower limbs, moved slash, and bladed control lines. Sixty-three acres of private land were burned, and burning was accomplished across boundary on National Forest Land. Award amount: $3,000. Total project cost: $6,000.
Woodmoor Improvement AssociationHazardous Fuels Reduction Incentives
Woodmoor Improvement Association has completed fire mitigation work on over 100 individual homesites and two common areas. The grant involves a 50/50 cost-share with reimbursement not to exceed $500 per homesite. CSFS personnel, with the assistance of homeowner "Tree Monitors" designed defensible space plans for the residents. Award amount: $30,000. Total project cost: $100,000.
Larimer County Slash Disposal Program
The Larimer County Slash Disposal Program provided the citizens of Larimer County with an economical means of creating defensible space and disposing of slash. The county hired a four-person mitigation crew to create defensible space, lease a chipper, provide four drop points for landowners to deposit slash, create two hazard fuels reduction demonstration sites, and contract for the burning of the slash when chipping was not feasible. Larimer County completed 198 miles of access improvement and fuelbreak construction, chipped and burned 38,420 cubic yards of mulch, and created 21 acres of demonstration projects. Award amount: $62,500. Total project cost: $359,000.
