The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If you would like to submit a program to the national wildfire programs database, please complete the following form (MS Word).

Title: Utah Living with Fire Program
Type: Education
Jurisdiction: State
State: Utah
Program Description: Program Goal

The "Utah Living with Fire Program" is a statewide effort by agencies and communities committed to providing wildfire protection information and to taking actions to mobilize citizens to establish and maintain wildfire defensible communities. The primary partners in the program are Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, USDA Forest Service, USDI Bureau of Land Management, FEMA, Salt Lake County Fire Department (FD), Davis County FD, Utah County FD, and Salt Lake City Emergency Services.

Educational Programs

Program members have produced an educational kit for use by fire professional, community activists, and teachers. The kits contain a Utah-based video and power point or slide presentation that reviews 10 tips to increase safety and reduce the probability of the loss of property when living in WUI areas. A manual accompanies the materials, which details how the kit should be used and provides a narrative to the power point or slide presentation. An interactive CD is also included in the kit to introduce children to the impact of wildfire. Presenters are strongly encouraged to attend a training session to become familiar with the materials so that a single, unified message is presented to the public.

The Living With Fire program has also been presented at home and garden shows, fairs and other large public events to promote understanding about the risks and responsibilities of living in Utah's WUI areas.

Living with Fire Publication

The publication, Living with Fire, is distributed widely in Utah. The booklet is a comprehensive guide to firesafe living in WUI areas that targets homeowners in the Great Basin. The booklet presents large, easily understood, drawings that depict fire behavior and defensible space models. The text is also presented in a format that is easy to interpret; a six-step approach is presented as a guide to creating effective defensible space. A listing of fire-resistant plants and an evacuation checklist are also included.

The primary contributors to the production of Living with Fire are the University of Nevada, the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators, and the Great Basin Fire Prevention Organization.

Press Conference

Fire managers from the Utah Department of Natural Resources, USDA Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management recently sponsored a press conference for the media highlighting actions that can be taken to further protect a home from wildland fire. Interestingly, the press conference was held in a private home in a subdivision where homes were lost to wildfire two years ago.
