Program Description: |
The Florida Division of Forestry has helped educators in Florida teach their students about fire through the Fire in Florida's Ecosystems (FIFE) program. The intention of the program is to teach students:
- The historical and natural role of fire in Florida's ecosystems
- The need for prescribed burning as the best way to prevent wildfire
- The benefits of prescribed burning for people and nature
- Ways to prevent wildfire.
Teachers participating in the program receive Fire in Florida's Ecosystems packages. The materials given to educators are free provided that they have participated in and completed a free 6 hour training course. Materials include:
a. Fire in Florida's Ecosystems Curriculum binder, including educator background, 11 students activities (including tree ring photographs), Florida Sunshine State Standards correlations, and reading passages with study questions designed to prepare students for standardized testing
b. Fire in the Longleaf/Wiregrass Ecosystem poster
c. Using Fire Wisely...Prevents Wildfire poster
d. Fire's Role in Nature -- Southeastern U.S. Pinelands poster
e. Longleaf Pine Ecosystems poster/brochure
f. Fire in the Southland video (Tall Timbers Research Station)

The FIFE program hands-on activities are designed for grade 3-12 students. Students will use science, reading, math, social studies, and visual arts skills to complete activities. The learning experiences also serve to prepare students for standardized testing.
The training session for educators typically lasts about 6 hours and includes:
a. background information on fire's natural role in Florida's ecosystems
b. an educational video about fire ecology and prescribed burning
c. discussion of "The Anatomy of a Prescribed Fire" with a Florida Division of Forestry representative
d. a close-up look at some fire management tools and technology
e. a field trip to a landscape managed with prescribed fire
f. a tour of the instructional materials
g. practice with at least four hands-on activities from the educators guide.
The FIFE materials and training session are offered by Pandion Systems under contract to the Florida Division of Forestry. Pandion Systems provides educators with the tools and training to effectively use the FIFE package in classrooms, in addition to a Florida Division of Forestry representative being present at every training session. As of February 2005, about 2,100 educators have attended workshops throughout Florida.
