Program Description: |
Using information provided by FireWise, Florida Firewise Communities have developed a website providing tips for Florida residents to make their homes safer from a wildfire. Included in this website are details of a firewise home, a landscape checklist, a construction checklist, and a pdf brochure depicting a firewise home.
FIREWISE HOME
Florida Firewise Communities detail a Florida Firewise home as having:
- Defensible space
- Fire-resistant attachments
- A disaster plan
- Lean, clean, and green landscaping
- Fire-resistant roof construction
- Fire-resistant exterior construction
- Emergency access
LANDSCAPE CHECKLIST
The landscape checklist breaks down the area around a home into zones. Zone 1 is closest to the home or structure while Zone 4 is the furthest zone from the structure. The primary goal in creating firewise landscape is fuel reduction. The landscape checklist offers helpful information of how to landscape each zone as well as how to maintain these zones once they are appropriately landscaped. Some of these maintenance suggestions include "Keep trees and shrubs pruned. Prune all trees up to 6 to 10 feet from the ground" and "Mow your lawn regularly."
CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST
A construction checklist can also be viewed at this website. The construction checklist is used to create a Firewise structure while striving for the goals of fuel and exposure reduction. An example checklist item is "Use construction materials that are fire-resistant or non-combustible whenever possible."
