FireWise landscaping not only can reduce the potential wildfire fuel, but can be aesthetically pleasing. This website offers a comprehensive FireWise plant list in addition to information about fire resistance, conifers, characteristics of FireWise plants, FireWise guidelines in planning landscape, maintenance. The web page also contains a list of relevant publications.

Fire-Resistant Landscaping
Vegetative clearance around a home (aka defensible space) is a key factor in the home's ability to survive wildfire. Fire-Resistant Landscaping describes structural elements of a FireWise landscape as well as how to landscape defensible space using grasses, ground cover plants, wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. Tips on appropriate maintenance are given in addition to other pertinent sources of information.
Creating Wildfire-Defensible Zones
The quality of defensible space around a home can determine its ability to withstand wildfire. In this informational fact sheet, defensible space is described and defensible space management zones are defined. Prescriptions for each type of defensible zone (Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3) are given along with tips on how to maintain the defensible space and an annual checklist.
Grass Seed Mixes to Reduce Wildfire Hazard
Planting "FireWise" grass species can reduce the risk of wildfire damage. The website offers facts about grass species, lists seed mixes for Colorado, as well as information on planting the mixes and listing references for maintenance of the grasses.
