The national database of state and local wildfire hazard mitigation programs serves as a clearinghouse of information about nonfederal policies and programs that seek to reduce the risk of loss of life and property through the reduction of hazardous fuels on private lands. If you would like to submit a program to the national wildfire programs database, please complete the following form (MS Word).

Title: Bend, OR - The High Desert Museum
Type: Education
Demonstration projects
Jurisdiction: Multi-level
State: Oregon
Program Description: In Bend, Oregon, The High Desert Museum is developing unique educational programs and exhibits focusing on the history and use of fire in the Intermountain Western ecosystem. The Museum will raise public awareness of the role of fire in the forests and grasslands, and increase knowledge and understanding of the science behind forest management practices of private, local, state and federal agencies.

The project is the result of a working partership between The High Desert Museum and the Oregon Department of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, Oregon State University, Project Impact, The Nature Conservancy, Bend Fire Department, Central Oregon Community College, and the Pacific Northwest Research Station.

Exhibits at the Museum will educate the public about fire history in the landscape, fire suppression philosophy, fire-fighting techniques and strategies, and how to live in a fire-prone environment. People will learn about the natural processes that create a dynamic forest ecosystem, and basic information about the role of fire in the ecosystem. The exhibits will provide a history of the relationship between humans and fire, and will promote understanding of one's individual responsibility of living in a fire-prone community. People will learn about the causes of structural combustion, how to create and maintain defensible space, the availability of non-combustible construction materials, and forest-thinning, prescribed burning and other fuel-reduction techniques.

The High Desert Museum will use its surrounding forest as a model for recommended silviculture principles and practices. A three-year fuel reduction program is underway on the Museum's 135 acres, beginning with the most critical areas. A guided Nature Trail has been created with interpretive stations that show examples of the natural history of the forest. Viewers can see a dense thicket of trees with ladder fuels blending to upper story trees, a reduced thicket, the remnants of a tree struck by lightning, a cut-away profile showing duff layers and volcanic events, evidence of a hand-cut fire line, and the effect of fire on wildlife habitats. The trail meanders through a prescribed burn area, with signs interpreting the stages of forest succession and regeneration that follow the fire.

The High Desert Museum reaches out to the surrounding community with a series of public and school education programs that integrate forest ecology with natural processes including fire. They host a series of lectures by scholars, authors, and forestry professionals, and offer the interpretive and interactive forest and fire ecology activities for school programs. They also offer off-site naturalist programs to local burn sites and area schools, and teacher workshops to integrate forest ecology and fire, using the Museum grounds and other sites.

The High Desert Museum's Wildfire Education Program is still in the formative stages. It is only in the second year of its seven year plan. Future plans include enclosing and heating the museum's display area, mounting a major long-term exhibit, and building a replica of a forest guard station and tower linking to the Wildland Fire Exhibit and the Interpretive Trail.
