Program Description: |
The Plumas County Fire Safe Council (FSC) is comprised of a variety of stakeholders throughout the County including representatives of homeowner associations, local and county government agencies and departments, the U.S. Forest Service, the California Department of Forest and Fire Prevention and others. The Plumas FSC is a part of the larger, statewide California Fire Safe Council network.
The Plumas County FSC is concerned with the education of area residents regarding the most effective methods for reducing wildfire risks. As part of this effort, the Council routinely works with other groups to leverage resources. For example, recently the Council has worked with the Plumas County Fire Warden to secure grant funding from the U.S. Forest Service for wildfire risk assessment, pre-fire planning (including fuel reduction) and emergency plan development. In addition, the Council received funding from the University of California Regents Cooperative Extension for "small equipment" demonstration projects for homeowners in the wildland-urban interface areas within the County. Further, the Plumas County FSC hopes to secure administrative support from the California Fire Safe Council and other funding sources chipper demonstration projects.
The Plumas FSC conducts public outreach through maintaining an educational booth at the County Fair and through press releases to local media outlets.
The Council has adopted a proactive position regarding "fire-safe" land-use planning within the County. Recently council members conducted a useful analysis of the extent to which national fire planning guidelines could be applied to a new Plumas County subdivision. The Council members hope to apply the insights gained from this analysis to planning efforts for new Subdivisions as well as evaluations of older residential neighborhoods.
