Program Description: |
The San Benito-Monterey Fire Safe Council serves the two county area of San Benito and Monterey Counties and is part of the larger, statewide California Fire Safe Network. The Fire Safe Council is dedicated to educating area residents about the steps they can take to reduce the risk to life and property from catastrophic wildfire. This group is also concerned with air quality in the area, particularly the effect on air quality of prescribed burning for hazardous fuels reduction. The Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District is represented on the Council along with representatives from homeowners associations, the Mid Carmel Fire Protection District, the Monterey County Public Works, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) and others.
The San Benito - Monterey Fire Safe Council seeks to place usable information about how to reduce the risk of wildfire into the hands of residents of these two counties. To further this objective, the Council has reached out to various stakeholder groups including the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (CDF) to coordinate the use of chipper equipment for private property owners. The Council seeks to make available--either through borrowing from agencies or renting--chippers to turn cut and stacked brush into useable mulch material before the peak fire season.
Along with educational outreach and helping to make to chippers available, the Council is involved with inspections for "fuel load reductions" in Aromas and North County. According to the Council's meeting minutes posted on their website, the response of the community residents has been largely positive.
