Program Description: |
The Lake Shastina Fire Safe Council (FSC) is a part of the larger California Fire Safe Council network. The Council brings together a variety of stakeholder groups within the County including the Lake Shastina Fire Department and Sheriff's Department, as well as area residents and property owners. The Council members work hard to coordinate information and community outreach activities concerning vegetation management to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire within the County.
The Lake Shastina Fire Safe Council (FSC) is concerned with educating and empowering the public to address the issue of fuel reduction. That knowledge also includes safety guidelines about when to engage in vegetation removal and when to delay action. For example, in October 2001, the Council reported in its minutes that residents should "hold off on the fire abatement at this time due to the very high fire danger and dryness of the vegetation". The Council also helps to disseminate important safety guidelines required by law for fuel reduction efforts. In addition to making information available to the communities within the County, the Council is involved in ongoing dialogues with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (CDF) to consider using CDF crews to clear dead wood and other hazardous brush from private properties.
The Lake Shastina FSC recognizes the importance of long-range planning and is developing a Five-Year-Plan to guide its outreach efforts, budget development, and proposal writing for future grant funding.
