The effort is patterned after the National Fire Protection Agencys Communities Program.
Eligibility
To be eligible, a neighborhood must achieve the following accomplishments:
1. the reduction of hazardous fuel accumulations on the majority of properties,
2. the widespread use of non-flammable building materials and fire-wise construction techniques,
3. conduct periodic neighborhood clean-up and public education events,
4. the involvement of one or more neighborhood Volunteers-In-Prevention -- individuals trained by the fire department to serve as program advocates.
Program Status
The "Firewise Neighborhood" program was initiated in 2002. The first neighborhood to complete the eligibility requirements was recognized on May 3, 2002. Other neighborhoods will likely be eligible for recognition in the near future.
